China Sinopec Shengli Oilfield Petrochemical Plant’s hydrogen production from water by electrolysis project has been put into operation in Dongying City, Shandong Province. This is Sinopec’s first megawatt-level alkaline electrolytic water for hydrogen production project, and it utilizes the clean electricity generated by the distributed photovoltaic power generation project of 6 MW at the factory.
The project consists of three modules: a photovoltaic power generation module with an installed capacity of 6 MW; an electrolysis module with a hydrogen production capacity of 500Nm3/h; and an electrochemical energy storage module with an installed capacity of 1 MW/1.2 MWh.
The project employs the most mature alkaline electrolysis water hydrogen production technology to produce green hydrogen with a purity of 99.999%, producing 123 tons annually. Compared to the current hydrogen production process using dry gas, this project reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 2,535 tons per year. The core equipment for green hydrogen production at the plant, the electrolytic cell, is manufactured by the 718th research institute of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation.
